چکیده

Ad hoc networks have been known to be extremely vulnerable to the hidden and exposed terminal problems, which consequently reduce dramatically the network capacity. The total lack of knowledge of the surrounding environment, a characteristic in-wrought with ad-hoc networking, is in most cases the main reason for the degradation of performance in Wireless Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). To effectively address this problem Wireless Medium Access through Record Keeping(WiMARK), a hybrid approach, is being proposed, combining the busy tone, the table-driven and the power-control protocols. Each node in WiMARK uses a local matrix where it stores the current condition of all its neighbouring nodes. The records of the matrix get updated by periodically transmitted Status Messages (SMs), which also have an RTS-like role in initiating a data packet transmission. The SMs that denote a critical change of status (i.e. the transition of a node from IDLE to RECEIVING_DATA state) are protected by a busy tone in order to be given the highest priority and thus maximize the chances of a successful transmission. In conjunction with this, the use of the power control scheme ensures the best possible bandwidth allocation in the area of interest. Index Terms – MANET, ad hoc, medium access protocol(MAC), busy tone, power control.

A Busy-tone Based Directional Mac Protocol for Ad Hoc Networks

In mobile wireless ad hoc networking environments, such as the Future Combat System (FCS), the shared wireless communication medium is an inherently limited resource and is collision prone. In this paper, we propose to adapt the Dual Busy Tone Multiple Access (DBTMA) protocol for use with directional antennas, which further increases effective channel capacity. In contrast to other directional ...

Evaluation of a BIBD Based Directional MAC Protocol for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

The use of directional antennas in wireless ad hoc networks can significantly improve global performance due to a high spatial channel reuse. Nevertheless, its introduction poses new location dependent problems related to the MAC protocol. In this paper, the Balanced Incomplete Block Design theory has been exploited to develop a new MAC protocol for wireless ad hoc networks using directional ant...

The original power controlled multiple access (PCMA) protocol does not support service differentiation. In this paper, we extend PCMA to form a new media access control protocol supporting service differentiation in mobile ad hoc networks. To support QoS, we first introduce the in-station access category concept in 802.11e to PCMA. For service differentiation between access categories, our majo...

Dual busy tone multiple access (DBTMA)-a multiple access control scheme for ad hoc networks

In ad hoc networks, the hiddenand the exposed-terminal problems can severely reduce the network capacity on the MAC layer. To address these problems, the ready-to-send and clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) dialogue has been proposed in the literature. However, MAC schemes using only the RTS/CTS dialogue cannot completely solve the hidden and the exposed terminal problems, as pure ―packet sensing‖ MAC sch...

The RRMS Protocol: Fair Medium Access in Ad Hoc Networks

MAC level protocols in ad hoc networks must overcome the decentralized nature of the network and provide adequate throughput and fairness. This paper presents a new MAC protocol named Randomly Ranked Mini Slots (RRMS), which provides throughput at near channel capacity and good fairness as defined by a common sense criterion we develop. The protocol achieves this by utilizing random (pseudo noi...
